Huck Finn Begins!
After reading chapters 1-7, what are your impressions of the characters and style so far? Twain loves satire- what are the objects of his satirical gibes? Any ideas for possible themes? Have you noticed examples of irony, symbols, or possible foreshadowing? What do you think of Tom Sawyer? Huck's father? Judge Thatcher? What else could Twain be mocking through these characters? Is Huck himself a symbol for something else? Do you have any questions, predictions, or other comments about the novel so far? Inquiring minds want to know!

So far... majority of the characters seem to be as I expected:
Huck seems to be a stubborn kid who does what he wants and complains about things he has to do that he does not want to. As others try to teach him, he only learns what he wants and forgets the rest.
Tom is not what I was expecting; I was not expecting the whole 'robber' aspect, I thought he would be a good kid who would get Huck to be good, too.
Huck's father seems to be a not so nice man; he judges his son from the first second he sees him, stating that he thinks he (Huck) is better than him (his father).
Huck could be a symbol for something later on in the book, along with his father, as they both seem to be characters with deeper meanings.
Tom Sawyer is a very interesting character. His imagination and sense of adventure rival no other character in the novel. I found it surprising that he reads adventure novels leisurely. I would like to hear and see more of him in the novel, but I guess that is what The Adventures of Tom Sawyer are for.
Huck's father can hardly be called a father. All his pap did for him was donate genes to create Huck. Other than that, Huck's pap pretty much has nothing to do with Huck's life. It puzzles me why Huck would give his father money out of his savings that Huck knows his father will use for more booze. Which leads to Huck getting beaten repeatedly.
I do like the character of Judge Thatcher, though. He seems like an honorable, honest guy. Thatcher seems pretty easy going, too, and I like that he tries to guide Huck to do smart things. He seems to care and look after Huck more than his biological father ever did.
